HOW CAN I RAISE MY CREDIT SCORE?

The number one way to increase your credit score is to pay your bills on time. Being late on your payments will drastically hurt your credit score. If you have already been late; the sooner you start paying on time, and the sooner you can start a better credit history that will raise your credit score.

Keeping your old accounts open will give you a longer credit history. A longer credit history will also raise your credit score. If you want a new credit card, sign up for one, but keep your old ones open. Closing them could shorten your credit history which would adversely affect your credit score.

It is also wise to keep your balances on your credit cards below 25% of the available credit. This shows the credit bureaus and anyone checking your credit that you are not close to being out of credit (money) and a possible greater credit risk.

Errors in your credit report can also decrease your credit score. Make sure to check your credit report often. If in your review of your report you spot any errors, make sure to fix them right away. You will most likely need to correct it with each of the three credit bureaus separately, since they are different companies. Remember, no one is going to be watching for mistakes or fraud, unless it is you. Unless, of course, you hire someone to do it for you. See Identity Theft, Credit Card Fraud, etc.
